Description
Vancomycin Hydrochloride is a glycopeptide antibiotic that is used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including some strains that are resistant to other antibiotics. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to the destruction of bacterial cells. Vancomycin is often used in hospital settings and is particularly effective in treating infections that involve resistant bacteria, such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Vancomycin is available in both oral and intravenous (IV) formulations, though it is primarily administered intravenously for systemic infections, as oral vancomycin is typically reserved for treating Clostridium difficile infections in the gastrointestinal tract.
