Description
Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic and antiparasitic medication used primarily for the treatment of a variety of parasitic infections. It is effective against a range of parasites, including nematodes (roundworms), ectoparasites such as mites and lice, and certain external parasites like scabies and head lice. It is most commonly used to treat onchocerciasis (river blindness), strongyloidiasis, ascariasis, and other helminthic infections.
Ivermectin works by disrupting the nervous system and muscle function of parasites, leading to their paralysis and death. It binds to and activates glutamate-gated chloride channels in nerve and muscle cells, particularly in the parasite’s neuromuscular junction, causing hyperpolarization and paralysis. This leads to the death of the parasite, especially in the case of microfilariae (immature parasites).
Ivermectin is usually well-tolerated and effective in treating parasitic infections, especially when used at the recommended doses. It can be used in both human and veterinary medicine.
